Abstract

This edited volume offers a wide-ranging picture of Argentine women filmmakers’ contribution to the film industry from the 1980s to the present by bringing together the work of highly acclaimed and emerging directors. Through thirteen critical essays by leading scholars in the field of Argentine cinema, the book acknowledges that contemporary women filmmakers have transformed the cinema of Argentina by questioning, challenging and debunking hegemonic patriarchal systems of representation. With a focus on women’s voices and experiences, the contributions redress both the under-representation of women and girls onscreen and the perpetuation of stereotypes, while exploring the innovative aesthetics used by these filmmakers. “This is the first book in English dedicated to the rich output of recent Argentine women filmmakers and features work by leading experts. Dr Daniel Mourenza is Assistant Professor in Hispanic Cultural Studies at Radboud Universiteit. His research focuses on film theory, visual culture and Spanish and Latin American cinema. He is the author of Walter Benjamin and the Aesthetics of Film (2020). Mourenza has also co-edited a special issue of Parallax on ‘Barbarism’. .

Abstract

This book focuses on the analysis of sensorial representations of violent images in contemporary films that portray embodied violation in urban environments of street clashes and prisons in Northern Ireland and Brazil during the late twentieth century. There is an emphasis on the representation of senses and how they play a significant role in structuring narratives and mapping the cinematic landscapes of conflict. Whether on the streets and prisons of Belfast, Derry, São Paulo or Rio, the attention is on the endangered body and its fragility or strength. Analyzing films through the novel framework of sensorial perspective enables the understanding of urban and prison landscapes as part of a somatic geography that affects the corporeal engagement of the participants. As a multicultural study, this is an essential book for those interested in the relationship between cinema and history while taking into consideration the interactive roles of the senses and perception.

Abstract

This volume explores how Latin American and Latinx creators have engaged science fiction to explore posthumanist thought. Contributors reflect on how Latin American and Latinx speculative art conceptualizes the operations of other, non-human forms of agency, and engages in environmentalist theory in ways that are estranging and open to new forms of species companionship. Essays cover literature, film, TV shows, and music, grouped in three sections: “Posthumanist Subjects” examines Latin(x) American iterations of some of the most common figurations of the posthuman, such as the cyborg and virtual environments and selves; “Slow Violence and Environmental Threats” understands that posthumanist meditations in the hemisphere take place in a material and cultural context shaped by the catastrophic destruction of the environment; the chapters in “Posthumanist Others” shows how the reimagination of the self and the world that posthumanism offers may be an opportunity to break the hold that oppressive systems have over the ways in which societies are constructed and governed. Antonio Córdoba is Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures at Manhattan College, USA. His main area of specialization is Latin American and Iberian science fiction. He has published ¿Extranjero en tierra extraña?: El género de la ciencia ficción en América Latina (2011) and published articles and book chapters on Latin American and Spanish science fiction and horror. Emily A. Maguire is Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University, USA, where she specializes in literature of the Hispanic Caribbean and its diasporas. The author of Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography (2011; 2nd edition, 2018), her articles have appeared in Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Small Axe, A Contracorriente, ASAP/Journal, and Revista Iberoamericana, among other places.

The reason these small cinematic sectors are of interest is twofold: first, the film markets of the aforementioned countries are often eclipsed by the filmmaking giants of Mexico, Brazil and Argentina; second, within the Andean countries these small cinemas are overshadowed by film board-backed cinemas whose products are largely designed for international film festivals. Christian Leon is a professor at Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar in Ecuador and a visiting professor at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) (Ecuador). He holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences at Universidad de Buenos Aires. Noah Zweig is a research professor affiliated with Arizona State University Online and Universidad Internacional del Ecuador. Abstract

Tracing the evolution of Mexican literary and cultural production following the Tlatelolco massacre, this book shows its progression from a homogeneous construct set on establishing the “true” history of Tlatelolco against the version of the State, to a more nuanced and complex series of historical narratives. The initial representations of the events of 1968 were essentially limited to that of the State and that of the Consejo Nacional de Huelga (National Strike Council) and only later incorporated novels and films. Juan J. Rojo examines the manner in which films, posters, testimonios, and the Memorial del 68 expanded the boundaries of those initial articulations to a more democratic representation of key participants in the student movement of 1968.

Abstract

This book is about television in Latin America. Its national and regional industries create most television programming there within genres developed over time in the region. However, part of the programming has always come from the U.S., Europe and elsewhere. With cable, satellite and now streaming TV, that inflow of foreign programming has increased substantially. While many in the audience still prefer national or regional programs for their cultural proximity, an increasing number among the upper-middle and middle classes, particularly the young, are turning to the new foreign services, like Netflix, Amazon and Disney for class distinction, cosmopolitanism or other motives. Among the television industries global regional and national actors are creating a variety of programs and channels (broadcast, pay-TV and streaming) to segment and appeal to different parts of the audience. Joseph Straubhaar is the Amon G. Carter, Sr. Centennial Professor of Communication in the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. He was previously Director of the Brazil Center in the Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. He was co-author of Latin American Television Industries. His research focuses on global media, television in Latin America, and the digital divide in Texas and Latin America. Melissa Santillana is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on international media flows, border studies, activist movements, feminist activism, digital media, and digital inequality. Vanessa de Macedo Higgins Joyce is an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University and a Research Fellow at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. Her research lies in the intersection of transnational media, digital journalism, consensus building, and Latin America. Luiz Guilherme Duarte is an international media research executive with awards for the developments of pioneer television measurement services. He is also adjunct professor at University of Central Florida.
